Meet To Match

18:00 CEST

6. Quartett der Spielekultur
The Quartet of Game Culture illuminates the artistic and cultural aspects of outstanding games. As in the »literary« original from German television, one moderator and three guests each choose a computer game and discuss its special features in terms of content and aesthetics. Sometimes euphoric, sometimes critical, but always with a passion for games!

Link to the premiere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cXTdkHeebs

The 6th Quartet of Games Culture will take place as part of A MAZE / Berlin and will premiere on YouTube on 21 July 2021 from 6 pm. This time, everything revolves around rule-breaking and non-conformity under the title »Frag The System!«. How much punk is there in computer games? Can we rebel against their rule systems? And which soundtrack would still sound really good on a scraggly electric guitar? Moderator Dennis Kogel will discuss these and other questions with Thorsten S. Wiedemann (A MAZE.), Lara Keilbart (ComicInvasion, freelance journalist) and Sonja Wild (WASD Bookazine).

Help me rebuild my broken alt-controller game!
What can you do with a broken alternative controller game? Make another one, of course!

During this livestream, audience members will help me rebuild my alternative controller game, Void of Memory (featured in A MAZE Open Screens 2019 - here is a description: https://juliamakivic.com/Games-Interactive/Void-of-Memory-Pt-3).

I recently moved countries and Void of Memory was broken during the process. I had originally planned to repair it on my own, but instead I would like to build a new alt controller using the broken fragments and hardware of the original game. The audience will decide how the breakage and fragments of the original game can be used to create a new alternative controller with a unqiue functionality and history. This livestream will involve a combination of live coding, soldering, making and crafting, and will result in a new alternative controller game influenced by audience participation.

Playful Museums
Museums tell stories. Games tell stories. Both in their own way and with their specific intensity. Let’s combine the two!

Games are an opportunity for institutions to attract new audiences and interact in new ways with existing audiences. How can museums pivot their stories and experiences to become as engaging for broad groups of people as the stories and experiences that people have with games?

According to the DFC Intelligence report (via GameRant), more than 3 billion people worldwide play video games in their free time. That’s almost 40% of the world's population! Given gaming’s enormous popularity, how can museums use the creativity of game designers and players to realise their goals and visions? What would it take for museums to be more appealing and inviting to game developers and the creative scene?

We’ll talk about these questions as they relate to our Game Jam "A World in Motion", which took place just before the A MAZE Festival. Game designers from all over the world worked with seven Leibniz Research Museums to develop a game that connected the institutions.

For the “stamppot” (potato mash mix)

- vegan milk (optional)
- nutmeg

for the homemade Jus:
- onion
- bayleaf
- vegetable stock
- rosemary or thyme. maybe both

How not to fail at connecting game and art
Contemporary game industry and art industry seem like a weird departed twin. On the one hand, both thrive on individual or/and collective creativity, and invite audience/players to participate and enrich the content and experience. On the other hand, while video games try to reach as many players as possible, contemporary art is still trying to maintain some kind of scarcity via market price, taste and institutional cannons. To make a game or curate an exhibition transpassing both fields therefore becomes its own art. In this talk, I want to use my own recent trips in producing, promoting and exhibiting Forgetter to showcase some experiences and dilemmas in connecting game and art.

Psychoanalysis and AI in "The Signifier"
"The Signifier" is a game that is based on Psychoanalytic and AI concepts, where narrative, visuals and gameplay mechanics "talk" about these subjects in an original way, interwined way. This short talk is about the difficulties we had in trying to marry entertainment and the passion behind wanting to tackle these complex subjects in a way that felt natural and core to the experience, instead of a narrative layer separate from the mechanics themselves.

Emerging Technologies, Experiences, Ethic & Everything in Between
Emerging Technologies, Experiences, Ethic & Everything in Between

WORKSHOP
Game Development and Game Engine Technologies are no longer just being used for traditional screen-based games. New Emerging areas of Technologies like AR & XR, Advances in AI, Robots, Trackers & Sensors, are now all being used to create Immersive Experiences that exist both in the virtual world and physical world.

A term like the slightly clichéd Metaverse might be used when talking about all these. For example concerts are now happening virtually on platforms like Fortnight. Movies and Fashion Designers are using game platforms like Roblox to create branded experiences for their premieres. TV shows like The Mandalorian are currently using game engines like Unreal, to build new Virtual Production pipelines. And Theatre and Live Performances are using real-time volumetric capture to have actors and actresses control virtual beings in virtual spaces, getting to interact with audiences in real-time.

As we see these new experiences get built up. And at these points where we’re seeing more and more digital technology being used for traditional media and entertainment. It also brings up topics about ethics. Who will our identities be in these virtual worlds? Who will be owning the data? What boundaries will be set in place to not invade my personal space with an overload of digital?

In this workshop. We’ll explore some of the trends in the Emerging Tech space. Talk about some of the examples that inspire us. Areas we’d love to see more of. Areas of growth. While also considering the ethical design questions we should be asking ourselves and those around us, as this industry grows.

AUDIENCE
Recommend for designers creative technologists, developers.

It is a project by African Robots & SPACECRAFT, interventionist art projects which have been collaborating with street wire artists in Southern Africa to produce interactive electronic and science fiction-themed wire art, for several years. This talk by the artist explores the project through the lenses of Digital Futurism, vernacular and popular cultures of the South, ethnomathematics and anthropophagy.

Arcades Argentinos: The DIY Arcade Scene of Argentina
In 2012, a series of underground nomad arcade machines started to emerge from the guts of Argentina in search of players around the country and beyond.

Experimental video games, pinballs and even a bizarre avant-garde foosball table are part of this movement that takes place not only at traditional arcade bars and alleys, but also at parties, conventions, concerts, galleries and outside, in the streets, for free.

Their makers are small creative bands with the most diverse backgrounds: from film to science, from sculpture to engineering, from chip music to toy making.

And their players are... everyone: from nostalgic boomers to clueless school kids, from casual enthusiasts to hardcore fans, from e-sports competitors to tabletop game geeks.

Welcome to the Argentinian arcade scene!

The Counterfeit Realities of Interactive Fiction. Authoring a pirated history of places, bodies and rituals.
With The Counterfeit Realities of Interactive Fiction I want to try and weave together a sprawling argument about interactive fiction, that spans across the legacy of colonialism, the bureaucratic tyranny of citizenship and the relationship of individual identity and collective histories - into contemporary political protest and the role of hypertext in the enunciation of dissent.

But most of all I want to examine Interactive Fiction as an extension of folk-theatre where it may be possible to imagine the performance of disembodied and democratic identities without the burden of nationhood. And I want to argue why hypertext might be a precursor to a fundamental change in how bodies, sites and territories are demarcated and how histories are recorded.

The workshop will combine lecture, discussion and short writing and playing exercises that use the interactive fiction tool : Twine. And the goal of the workshop would be to examine the confluence of political and contemporary history, postcolonial thought and practice and interactive fiction - and how game authors and creators might contribute to the enunciation of a generous and inclusive political order.

Audience
While there is no prior skill or knowledge required, a familiarity with interactive fiction will certainly help and the workshop will be particularly suited to authors, game creators, and those interested in the confluence of electronic media and contemporary historiography. Note : the workshop will be conducted in English.

Requirements
Access to a computer which can run Twine (https://twinery.org/). Pen, Paper, Scissors & Glue.

Sensitive Topics
The workshop intends to confront various political beliefs and their manifestation.
In particular the workshop will delve into an examination of the violent occupation of Kashmir, and the plight of refugees. It will also discuss state sanctioned violence, incarceration and persecution of subaltern and indegenious people and the violent suppression of dissent. All of these will usually be discussed in the context of post colonial SouthEast Asia, though broader examples and conclusions might occasionally be drawn.
This workshop will be given via Zoom.

A MAZE. Live Cooking Show: Garlic Noodles with Jay Palmer
The A MAZE Live Cooking Show returns!

After the success of last year we are doing it again! A couple of chefs from the A MAZE. community are ready to share their favourite local dish, cook it on the livestream while they are interviewed about their practice.

Are you ready to join our chefs? We are sharing the ingredients and recipe so you can cook along!

Share your cookalong thoughts & media via twitter (#AMaze2021, #AMAZELiveCooking) or on our discord channel.

Today:
Garlic Noodles with Jay Palmer

Note: I started to cook this cos of the sims 4. I never had it before. It just looked so good I had to try it. I’ve never tried anyone else’s recipe, just the one I made up by looking at a bunch of them online. Now it’s one of my fav dishes, and easy to make.

6 - 8 cloves of garlic, almost minced
1 - 2 6-sided-dice sized pieces of ginger, almost minced
50g butter or vegan butter
olive oil
the whites from 3 - 4 spring onions, roughly sliced

fry the above stuff until fragrant and soft on medium heat in a big skillet, but try not to brown it

meanwhile, cook one package of spaghetti (500g? or less) as per insturctions

3 tbs tamari or soy sauce
1 tbs brown sugar
1 tbs miso paste (white, brown, or red) or Doubanjiang
1 tsp sambal olek (or other chili paste, sriracha works too)
1 tsp sesame oil (i prefer toasted)

mix above ingredients, and set aside while spaghetti and veg is cooking.

When veg and spaghetti is done, add the spaghetti to the veg, adding a few spoons of spaghetti water to get it moving. when everything is combined, add the sauce you set aside before, and mix well. Keep cooking 5 minutes or so, until everything is looking combined and glossy. If it's too dry, add more spaghetti water.

serve with the green part of the spring onions roughly sliced, and black and/or white sesame seeds, and optionally chilli flakes or chilli oil.

A song to commemorate that really good ramen I made
The joy of cooking and spending time with ingredients, as I guide them through their different chapters of life. The bond I've grown with the ingredients, and the temporary stains they leave on my clothes and skin, but the permanent multisensory memory. Sometimes I feel that the meal was wonderful, but it was a bittersweet funeral for our time together.
As an artist who loves process just as much as the result, I often wish that I could just cook forever. So I made a recording of some really good ramen I made, and from that recording, I have made a song to commemorate our time together.
It could also be argued that this talk is an exploration of diegetic and non-diegetic audio in cooking and play.

EURYDIKE INFECTED - A MINDALTERING MIXED REALITY MYSTERY
EURYDIKE questions our patriarchal high-tech society, which still instrumentalizes women as objects of male desires, degrading them - both living and dead – to passive tools that are neither heard nor seen. The Mixed Reality Mystery liberates the female from her shadowy existence through an gameplay between reality and virtuality: With the interactive exploration of a retrofuturistic venue – a silent, voiceless place – is made resound: The unheard receive a voice.

EURYDIKE INFECTED reacts to the pandemic through an interplay of a real 150m² big game location interacting with AR, VR and 3D Sound. With VR goggles and protective suit user immerse deeply into a sensory labyrinth that wants to be unravelled. The apocalyptic sci-fi scenario confronts with silence, slowness, irritation and loss of control as well as the restriction of physical senses with simultaneous virtual expansion: the social state of emergency as a physical-mental borderline experience that mutates into an encounter with one's own reflection and poses questions about perpetrators and victims anew.

Lead by XR pioneer Evelyn Hriberšek, international artists and creatives are collaborating since 2015 to stimulate a broad attention on gender. Its global relevance is confirmed by radicalizations such as #Gamergate and #MeToo. In the wake of the pandemic, the unheard must not be forgotten - especially as outrages have increased in both the real and the digital.
